SPRING COURSES FOR 2013
Converge courses are suitable for all levels of experience, open to beginners and people who have previously attended one or more of our courses alike. Sign up and find your creative self!
Places on all the courses must be booked. Places are limited and allocated on a first come first served basis so if you are interested in any of these opportunities, please apply as soon as possible by:

Details of where to meet and what to bring will be given when your place is confirmed. If you have not attended a previous Converge course, we will invite you to an introductory meeting before the class begins.
We have student volunteers (buddys) if you need any extra support to attend these courses. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if there is anything we can do to help you.
Mentoring support can also be offered to help individuals recognise and develop motivation to complete their goals, e.g mentoring and practical support to identify the next step in achieving individual’s ultimate educational/employment aims. Theatre and Performance course 2013
The Theatre course will run between 5.30pm and 7.30pm on the following Thursdays in 2013:
14th,21st and 28th February 2013, 7th, 14th,21st and 28th March 2013, 11th, 18th and 25th April 2013
This will be a practical theatre course on which students will be asked to work very quickly. Students will work towards a performance in May and may have the opportunity to audition for the Out of Character Theatre Company - please click on the name to take you to further information about this.
Due to this being a course progressing to performance, commitment to the whole course, except in cases of illness/emergency, is necessary.
Developing Your Voice, with ‘Communitas’ Choir
Communitas is a community choir run as part of the Converge centre at York St John University. We sing a wide variety of songs – English folk, gospel, African, etc.
The songs are taught aurally and there is no requirement to read music or to be a trained musician – it’s all about enjoying singing, finding your voice and having fun!
The choir meets every Tuesday evening during term times, from 6pm to 7.30pm, and welcomes people who use mental health services, university students and staff.
The first session of this year was on Tuesday 29th January 2013 but please don’t worry that the choir has already started! All are welcome to join in at any time but please let us know you are coming if you are new.
Musical Development – Practice, Performance and Composition
This course starts on Thursday 14th February 2013 and runs for a total of 8 weeks with a 3 week break for Easter. The actual course dates are:
14th, 21st and 28th February 2013, 7th, 14th and 21st March 2013, 18th and 25th April 2013
Each session will last 2 hours, starting at 10am and finishing at 12 noon, with a 10/15 minute break.
The course will enable students to build on their musical interests or any existing musical skills and knowledge in a friendly group environment. The course will aim to cover a wide range of subjects within the world of music through both practical and theoretical activities. These subjects will include:
♪ Composition and Song Writing
♪ World Music
♪ Drumming and Rhythm
♪ Improvisation
♪ Performance
♪ Music Theory
We welcome people of all levels and from all genres of music, whether you are completely new to music, wanting to revisit music learning or have a specific skill you would like to bring to the group, we have a firm belief that everyone is a musician.
Introduction to Dance and Movement
You will learn more about dance and movement in a supportive atmosphere at the university.
Dance sessions run between 3.30pm and 5.30pm on Wednesdays. The first session of this year was on Wednesday 30th January 2013 but please don’t worry that the dance classes have already started! All are welcome to join in at any time but please let us know you are coming if you are new.
Dance is for everyone and everybody can dance!
Why dance?

● You will experience different styles of dance and methods of creating movement

Creative Writing
Would you like to write? Are you an aspiring writer? Come along and join a course in creative writing to hone your skills and share experience with other budding writers. No previous experience is necessary.
The course runs on Wednesday afternoons (4.00PM – 6.00PM), 20th March – 8th May 2013 at York St John University

Usually held in September, this event offers a great chance to meet the staff and try out some classes in a fun and friendly environment. Please keep checking the website for updated details for 2013′s event.
